The second window of the Jesus triplet is concerned with the Passion and Death of Jesus.  It contains a crown of thorns, a cross arising from a tree, and a Lamb with blood and water coming from its side.  The crown has a twofold significance.  It recalls the royal ancestry of Jesus from King David, and since it is made of thorns it also recalls the pre-crucifixion suffering of Christ.  The cross arising out of a tree recalls his sacrificial death and the ignominious nature of this death. (Deuteronomy toward 1:23, Galatians 3:13) It also fulfilled Old Testament prophecies.  (Isaiah 42:1-4, 49:1-6, 50:4-9, 52: 13 – 53: 12)

Finally the Lamb with blood and water flowing from its side recalls John 19:33-37, where Jesus’ side was pierced with a spear.  This Gospel of John equates the sacrifice of Jesus with the sacrifice of the lamb at the original Passover Meal.  This passage in John also reflects the eternal worship in heaven where Christ is forever offered as a lamb appearing as though sacrificed.  (Revelation 5:1-14)
