The third window of the church triplet is concerned with the mission of the Church. Jesus told the disciples to “Go into all the world and proclaim the Good News to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved.” (Mark 16:15-16) This window has a ship, a net and fish, a hen and chicks, and a golden gate.
The ship is an
ancient Christian symbol for the church. The net and fishes recall
Christ’s parable about his kingdom. (Matthew 13:47-50) It also
recalls Christ instruction to the Apostles, “Follow Me, and I will make
you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)
The hen and chicks refer to the solicitude
and concern expressed by Jesus as he was overlooking Jerusalem. On
this occasion he said, “How often have I desired to gather your children
together as a hen gathers are brood under her wings.” (Matthew 13:47-50,
Luke 13:34) While this emotion was addressed primarily to the
Jews, it is to be extended to all people through the Church.
Finally, the golden gate symbolizes our ultimate goal and perfection, which is only to be realized in heaven. (Revelation 21:10-21) Yet it is to be remembered that this process begins here in Christ’s kingdom, the Church, here on earth.
