The second window of the church triplet is concerned with the authority and leadership of the church. It shows St. Peter holding keys and a book, standing adjacent to a rock.
This image signifies
the event of Matthew 16:18 in which Jesus says “Thou art Peter and upon
this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell will not prevail
against it.” Peter was given the authority of Jesus to lead the Church,
once Jesus ascended to heaven. The keys, and ancient Jewish symbol,
signify authority to rule, (Isaiah 22:15-25, Matthew 18:18, Luke 22:31-32,
John 21:15-17) while the book represents his authority to teach and interpret
revelation (1 Peter 1:20-21) -- this authority is still enjoyed by the
Pope, John Paul II, the 264th successor of Peter. The book also represents
sacred Scripture. Therefore the combination of both Peter and the
book represents the foundation of the Church found in the balance between
Sacred Scripture and the tradition of the church passed down through the
ages.
