The first window of the church triplet is concerned with how we are saved, how we’re made members of God’s family, or how the redemption merits of Jesus are passed on to us.  This window has a cross, tongues of fire, a seven-branched Candlestick, and a broken chain.

A cross recalls the sacrifice of Jesus, which is the source of our salvation.  It also recalls Christ’s description of what it means to follow him “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.” (Matthew 16:24, Luke 14:27, Galatians 6:14)  The tongues of fire symbolize Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus, descended on the initial members of his church in visible form.  (Acts 2: 1-13)  This same Holy Spirit mediates and applies the merits of Christ to the Church.  The Church in turn transfers these merits to its children by means of the sacraments, particularly Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.  The seven-branched Candlestick represents the seven sacraments.  The broken chain is indicative of our being freed from sin.  (Acts 2:38)

This window then epitomizes the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the holy Church, and the sacraments.
