The second window
of the Abraham triplet shows Abraham with a staff and sky of stars.
This depicts the call of Abraham. It also recalls the threefold promise
that God made to Abraham: descendants, a promised land,
and blessings for all the families
of the earth. (Gen 12:1-3) Each part of this promise was ultimately
raised to covenant status by God and resulted in Abraham becoming the first
member of God’s Chosen People or Family. (Gen 15, 17, 22) The stars
specifically recalled God’s promise to Abraham that he would have more
descendants than the stars of the sky or the sand of the seashore. (Gen
15:5) Although not depicted here, the sign of God’s covenant was
circumcision. (Gen to 17: 9-14) The staff is a symbol of both Abraham’s
leadership and authority, as well as God’s protection. The fact that
Abraham shared in God’s authority and that he was an ancestor of Jesus
foretells the blessings that will come through his lineage to the entire
human race.
